PALMA... FIRST FOREING PORT

We took the Med relief group over in 59 and then went on a ''good will tour''. Our first port of call was the little island off the coast of Spain in the Med. sea. The name of the island is Palma de Majorkia. (spelling). It was our first port of call in about three weeks so we were all ''ready''..... It was my first foriegn port of call so I had a lot to learn.
We manned the rail when we pulled in and I was amazed at the taxies and the beautiful young ladies lining the pier. We broke ranks and prepared for liberty. I kept looking at the ladies and they were holding printed paper cards in one hand and a thing that looked kinda like a drivers license in the other hand. They all smiled and waved. They all had black hair, dark eyes and lovely skin. I asked my buddy what the deal was with all the girls and were they ''girlfriends'' of guys on the Norton.........
''Uhhhhhhhhhhhh, Nope, not girlfriends but they will like you for a couple of dollars''....
''Ok, what is the paper in their hand for.''
''That is a 'first drink free' at the bar they work at.'''''
''Ok, what is the thing in their other hand?''
''That means they have been INSPECTED RECENTLY''
''Inspected for what?''
''Dang man, you are green aint you?''
''Inspected v.d. and such''..............
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOKKKKK................
the idea was that they would give you the 'first drink free' card, hustle you into a cab and take you to the bar where they worked.......
I will leave this story here because ladies will probably read this but I will say that I was ninteen years old, I had been at sea for about three weeks, I had a months pay in my pocket and Cinderella Liberty. That meant I had over twelve hours to ''spend and play''.....
I still have fond memories or those days and I came out ''clean''..... just luckey I guess...
GOD BLESS OUR TROOPS AND BRING THEM HOME SOON AND SAFE
GOD BLESS OUR VETS FOR THEIR SERVICE TO THIS GREAT NATION......
Seajay the sailor man.....
A man could really ''hurt himself'' in a place like this..
