LETS GO AGNAS

AGNES
Harriet has to have been the clumsiest horse in the world. She was a ''good old horse'' but she had four left feet. She could trip over a pebble or stumble over her own shadow. She never actually 'fell'' with me riding her but she would trip over everything. It was a good thing she had four feet or I would have spent most of the day getting up and re-mounting......
We saddled up and headed out early because Art wanted to move about a fifty cows down the road toward new grass down close to Shermans Store or at least in that direction. The cows were really scattered along the hill side and it was kinda simple to just gather them up into a group and move them down beside the road. I was appointed to ride ''drag'' (last man back) to keep the cows from turning back toward the last pasture and to watch for strays along the way. Jim was on the right and Art was up next to the road being sure no cows got into the road as we traveled along. All was going well and I took my rope loose from my saddle ring. It was a cowboy rope and I figured it would be real ''cowboy like'' to ride along with the rope in my hand kinda swinging it at the cows as I rode. I got really good a kinda twirling it over my head without knocking my hat off. Most of the time I would just swing it around in a circle and make ''cowboy'' voice sounds like ''Get along little dogie''......''Yippie cye yeah''... and cowboy stuff like that. I kept it kinda quiet so Art and Jim would not hear me and laugh. All was going well until I made one little error with the rope. It seems that when I twirled the rope I got a little overly ambitious and accidentally hit Harriet on the rump with the knotted end of the rope. With this she came ''un-corked'' and started bucking. I think I did well for one ''buck'' and then I went flying over her head landing in one of those creosote bushes on my butt..... Strangely I still had the rains in one hand and the rope in the other and my hat still on my head. The bush broke my fall and nothing was hurt except my pride. Art seen the whole thing and pulled up and waited for me to re mount and continue.
''You ok boy?'' ''Hope you didnt dent that hat I shaped for you''......
I climbed back on and put the rope away. I really wanted to rub my butt but I didnt dare show pain in front of Art.
We moved the cows along side the road and there was a big Cadillac car came around the curve. It got even with Art and stopped and two little ladies stepped out with a Kodak movie camera. She propped on the fender of the car and started shooting film. When Art got along side her she hailed him to a stop.
''Excuse me sir, are you a cowboy''?
''Yep, I recon I am lady''
''Are all these cows yours sir''?
''Not exactly but I am in charge of all of them''.....
Art stopped his horse and kicked one leg over the saddle horn and rolled a ''twirlie'' and lit up.......
''Me and Agnes want to know something''........
''Ok, ask away mam''............
''How long does it take you and these two boys to MILK ALL THESE COWS IN THE EVENING''?
Art leaned back in his saddle and gave that ''knowing half smile'' and said...
''Well mam, it's a real chore but me and these two boys can get it done in less than an hour on a good day''...............
''Thank you sir''. ''Lets go Agnes''.......
They got back in the car and went on down the road …..
we headed toward the good pasture close to Shermans Store......
